The Q in this instance being the Approved Document Q – Security as it applies to the Building Regulations .

Something is stirring in the world of composite doors with new rule changes to ensure more demanding security standards – the majority of new composite doors arrive at your home as an engineered unit comprising the already pre-assembled door and frame which is known as a “doorset “and the Document Q definitions of a secure Doorset are –

Either

A doorset that is proven to resist physical attack by a casual or opportunist burglar or

A bespoke doorset incorporating construction features that are proven to reduce crime.

As of October 1st 2015, the changes to the Building Regulations means all composite doors installed in new build properties will be required to achieve the enhanced standards of PAS 24 – the BS standard for enhanced security performance of doors and windows.

The revised and more demanding PAS 24 test gives composite doors three minutes to survive an attack using two chisels (a 6mm and a 25mm) and a Stanley knife, the test itself comprising the cutting of a 50mm hole – the perceived opening through which an arm can be used to fit and open the door from the inside through the door – if it takes less than three minutes to cut this hole the door is classified as having failed. In order to clarify the benefits of a Solidor we would recommend all prospective purchasers view the attached video as it demonstrates in a graphic fashion exactly what the new standard requires from a new composite door.

With the introduction of this new legislation, installers now need to ensure that their products are in compliance with the latest requirements, being ahead of the game Solidor have already added a page to their web site where their MD Joe Martoccia describes the merits in an article Solidor is real-life secure and ready for Document Q
