Set by the side of the lake that bears its name lies the city of Como nestling between the lake and the Alps it is now a thriving tourist centre with an area of 146 square kilometres (56 sq mi), lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, at 400 metres (1,300 feet) deep, it is one of the deepest in Europe so deep in fact that and the bottom of the lake is more than 200 metres (660 ft) below sea-level.
The city and the Lake, which is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Europe has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times, a favourite place for artists and now a holiday retreat of the rich and famous as many notable celebrities have homes along its shoreline.
One of the most famous attractions in Como is the Funicular railway which links Como to Brunate high in the mountains above the city a link which has operated since 1894 and is still the quickest route between the two centres. In the UK we have a number of funicular railways and there are many more around the world, notably the one made famous by the song of the same name FUNICULI FUNICULA by Richard Strauss commissioned for the first Funicular railway on Mt Vesuvius in 1880– a song which sounds better in Italian – compare and contrast the Mario Lanza version and the Andrea Bocelli versions – whichever you prefer one thing is certain there can be few funiculars as spectacular as the Como – Brunate Funicular
In mid-August 2011, the funicular reopened after an overhaul complete with new air-conditioned cars , each 12 metres (39 ft 4 in) long and 2.1 metres (6 ft 11 in) wide, and carry 81 passengers – set us wondering here at Timber Composite doors – one of the most popular doors in The Italia Collection is the Como a door that will grace any home and even the car for a funicular railway – here’s one we mocked up earlier.
