When it comes to adjusting composite doors hinges, it can be a bit of a tricky task. You may need some skill and patience, but with careful attention to detail, you’ll make sure that your door is working as it should be and looks just as good as it did when it was first installed.
Why do composite doors catch on the door frame?
Composite doors are gaining increasing popularity as homeowners increasingly opt for this style as their new front door, surpassing traditional wooden doors, thanks to the wide array of benefits they provide. Nonetheless, one of the few challenges associated with composite doors is the potential for warping and catching on the frame as time goes by.
This occurrence is triggered by sudden fluctuations in humidity or temperature, resulting in the door warping, creating gaps in the frame, and making it challenging to open and close the door.
How can I check if my composite door needs to be adjusted?
To assess whether your door hinges require adjustment, you can follow these steps:
- Examine the corners: Check if the corners of the door align with the mitres of the frame. If they are not aligned, it indicates that the door hinge needs adjustment.
- Use a leveller: Place a leveller on top of the door to determine if it sits correctly within the frame. If the leveller indicates an uneven alignment, it signifies that the hinge needs adjustment.
- Assess the gap: As you slightly open the door from the lock side, observe if the gap between the door and the frame remains consistent along the entire length. If you notice inconsistencies in the gap, it suggests that the hinge needs adjustment.

The instructions provided below specifically pertain to adjusting Challenger 3D Butt Hinges. Please ensure you follow the appropriate instructions based on the type of adjustment you need to make.
Carefully remove the top cap from the hinge.
Inspect the alignment of the pin by locating the mark on the top of the pin. If the mark is facing towards the door sash, it signifies a neutral adjustment setting.
To increase compression, rotate the pin in a manner that brings the alignment mark closer to the door frame.
To reduce compression, rotate the pin so that the alignment mark moves away from the frame.
Gently remove the bottom cap from the hinge.
To elevate the door sash, carefully rotate the vertical adjustment screw in a clockwise direction. Ensure that you adjust all other hinges in a similar manner.
To lower the door sash, simply turn the vertical adjustment screw counterclockwise. Once again, ensure that you adjust all other hinges uniformly.
Take off the side cover caps.
Rotate the lateral adjustment drives in the required direction, making sure that the alignment marks on each pair are positioned at the same point.
Important note: It is advisable to make adjustments gradually, aligning the marks on each hinge pair until you achieve the desired adjustment. Avoid adjusting only one adjuster or hinge on its own.
Verify that the doors swing smoothly and close securely without any obstructions. If this is the case, congratulations! You have effectively adjusted the hinge of your composite door.
